Dear Valued Patient,
We are writing to inform you of an important upcoming change in how we can prescribe certain controlled medications, particularly those classified under Schedule II and III. This change, which we anticipate will take effect on January 1st, 2025, is expected to align with the enforcement of the Ryan Haight Online Pharmacy Consumer Protection Act of 2008 (Ryan Haight Law). While this law was temporarily waived during the COVID-19 pandemic to accommodate the need for telemedicine, we strongly suspect that the waiver will end, requiring in-person visits for continued prescriptions of specific medications.
Medications Affected
The following medications, commonly used to treat conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, panic disorders, and sleep disorders, are among those that will be impacted by this requirement:
Schedule II Medications:
Stimulants: Adderall (amphetamine), Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine), Ritalin (methylphenidate), Concerta (methylphenidate), Focalin (dexmethylphenidate)
Opioid Pain Relievers: OxyContin (oxycodone), Vicodin (hydrocodone), Percocet (oxycodone and acetaminophen)
Schedule III Medications:
Benzodiazepines: Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam)
Others: Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone) for opioid dependence, testosterone (various brand names) for hormone therapy
Impact of the Ryan Haight Law
The Ryan Haight Law was enacted to regulate the prescription of controlled substances, particularly over the internet, requiring at least one in-person medical evaluation before a prescription can be issued. During the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth exceptions were made to allow for the continuation of care without in-person visits. However, with the expected enforcement of these rules on January 1st, 2025, an in-person visit will once again be mandatory.
Action Required
To ensure that there is no interruption in your care or access to your medications, it is crucial that you schedule an in-person appointment at our office located at 1034 S Brentwood Blvd before the end of this year. We expect that additional requirements may be introduced by the DEA at that time, and we will keep you informed of any further changes as soon as we receive more information.
In-person appointment days are Wednesdays and Thursdays. With the upcoming holiday season and anticipated increase in patient volume, we strongly encourage you to book your appointment as soon as possible.

What If You Cannot Come In Person?
If you are unable to attend an in-person visit, it may be necessary to find a new provider who can meet with you in person. Since this regulation is national, finding a new provider may take some time. We recommend starting your search early, either through your insurance company or resources like Psychology Today.
We appreciate your understanding and continued support during this transition. Our priority is to ensure that your care remains uninterrupted and that you have access to the necessary medications. We will continue to provide updates as we receive more information.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
